Most fans feel like they know what’s best for their favourite teams and I’m no different. It’s what makes sports so much fun, dreaming of different scenarios and solutions.
This isn’t perfect to the dollar or anything, but If I was the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, this is what I would do this off season.
Compliance Buyout-
Tomas Kaberle- This is a no brainer as it takes 4.25M off the books
Montreal Unrestricted Free Agents-
Michael Ryder– Won’t be resigned. Let him someone else pay him.
Colby Armstrong- Won’t be resigned. Good in the room but replaceable.
Davis Drewiskie– Won’t be resigned. Never really knew ya.
Jeff Halpern– Won’t be resigned. Love him but not sure the roster has room to risk the cap space.
Petteri Nokelainen– Won’t be resigned. Finally gone.
Frederic St. Denis– Won’t be resigned. Maybe gets a cheap 2 way or AHL deal.
Jason Desantis– Won’t be resigned. Who?
Montreal Restricted Free Agents-
Dustin Tokarski– Resign for under 1M cap hit on a 2way deal and make him starter in Hamilton.
Yannick Weber- Won’t be resigned. Traded at draft.
Ryan White- Resign for under or close to 1M cap hit. Love the energy and believe he will get better.
Gabriel Dumont- Resign for under or close to 1M cap hit. Depth move.
Ian Schultz- Won’t be resigned.
Michael Blunden- Won’t be resigned.
Robert Mayer- Won’t be resigned.
Joe Stejskal- Won’t be resigned.
NHL Unrestricted Free Agents-
Brian Bickell- Sign for under or close to 1M cap hit. Chicago connection, adds size and toughness to fourth line.
Trades-
Trade Michael Bournival, Greg Pateryn and 2nd round pick in 2014 NHL Entry draft to the St. Louis Blues for Chris Stewart (RFA).
- St. Louis has a lot of contracts to deal with this summer and Stewart might be the odd man out
- Sign Stewart to a 5 year 4.5M cap hit
Trade Yannick Weber for late round pick or package with another pick to move up in draft.
Other-
Sign PK Subban to a six year extension at 6.5M cap hit.
Draft-
Trade up and get into the 15th to 20th pick range.
First Round Targets:
- Anthony Mantha
- Frederick Gauthier
- Bo Horvart
- Max Domi
- Curtis Lazar
Other Draft Targets:
- A goalie, need more goalie depth
- Anthony Duclair
- Nikita Zhadorov
2013/2014 Roster-
- The addition of Stewart provides depth across all four lines.
- Cap space is limited so the Bickell signing could be trashed
- Moen, White, Bickell and Dumont would move in and out
